OVERVIEW

Guest: Charles von Arentschildt
Dates: 3rd February - 13th February 2018
Nights: 10
Destinations: Queenstown - Hawkes Bay - Bay of Islands - Tara Iti

Winter scene in the snow, Queenstown. New Zealand.

QUEENSTOWN

About two-thirds of the way down the South Island, in the middle of the Southern Alps, sits Lake Wakatipu, and on its shores, Queenstown. If ever a town deserves its reputation as the world’s adrenalin capital, surely this place does. You can bungee jump off bridges, or even out of a helicopter, take a jet boat ride through white-water canyons, heli-skiing in virgin powder snow, go extreme mountain biking, zip-line through valleys, and paraglide off mountains – you name, you can do it in Queenstown. There is, however, a more gentile side to Queenstown – one that includes luxurious, world-class lodges, superb wineries, great restaurants and scenery to die for… and five international-standard golf courses. This picturesque lakeside town has it in spades, whatever the season, whatever the activity. It absolutely must be part of any itinerary when visiting New Zealand.

DAY ONE - Saturday 3rd February 2018

7:30am Arrive into Auckland Airport on flight NZ0005, and be met by Air Centre One as soon as you exit the plane. They will have a sign with your name on it, and be there to help you through customs and help with luggage. Once you are through the arrivals hall you will be guided to your private vehicle to be driven to the Domestic terminal to check in for your flight to Queenstown.

10:30pm Depart on flight NZ621 to Queenstown, courtesy of Air New Zealand.

12:20pm Arrive into Queenstown and meet your driver, who will transport you to your accommodation. Your driver will be holding a sign with your last names printed.

1:45pm Arrive at your accommodation and enjoy the afternoon at your own leisure.

7:00pm Dinner will be at Rata restaurant. Unfortunately they do not take bookings between 6 - 8:30pm, but walk ins are available in between these times.

DAY TWO - Sunday 4th February 2018

7:00am Breakfast is available at the Hotel restaurant Lombardi Room.

8:00am Meet your guide/driver, Gordy Watson outside the main foyer and depart with him for your trout fishing experience. Gordy will transport you on a short 20 minute drive to the Helicopter pad to meet the team and fly into a remote river selected from discussions the day before between guide and yourself about preferences and suitable locations.

With chartering the helicopter and having it at your disposal you can fish several locations and can also enjoy lunch in a spectacular mountain setting as part of the charter. The aim is to return to the hotel around 6pm, but once again this is not predetermined and up for decision during the day. Flying over snow capped peaks, glaciers and even coast line, this is as much an experience as it is a fly fishing package.

Gordy's Tip: A good note is this time of year is cicadas seasons and will most likely be the fly of choice making for some exciting fishing and well conditioned fish.

Note: All the necessary fly fishing equipment can be provided. Most likely the target species will be Brown trout.

6:00pm Gordy Watson will drive you back to your accommodation from the helipad.

7:30pm Dinner will be at Bunker restaurant at the upstairs dining room. Booking is under 'Joe Aragona'.

DAY FOUR - Tuesday 6th February 2018

7:00am Breakfast is available at the Hotel restaurant Lombardi Room.

8:00am Meet your guide/driver, Gordy Watson outside the main foyer and depart with him for your trout fishing experience. The drive will take between 1-1.5 hours to a fishing location chosen for the weather, water levels and seasonal characteristics for that time. Leaving the vehicle you will walk upstream throughout the day. Typically Gordy will adopt the classic sight and stalk technique. Depending on the location and conditions you will have the option of wet wadding or wearing waders. The time we spent on the water or walking upstream is at your discretion, but Gordy normally returns to the hotel around 6pm.

7:30pm Dinner has been booked at Toro Kitchen and Bar.

HAWKES BAY

An hour’s flight southeast of Auckland is Hawke’s Bay, a region of diverse and magnificent landscapes, from mountains and hill country down to inland and coastal plains. Blessed with fertile, alluvial soils and a warm temperate climate, Hawke’s Bay is home to hundreds of farms, orchards and vineyards, making it New Zealand’s agricultural powerhouse. For the tens of thousands of visitors that flock to the region each year, it’s the food and wine that are the biggest draw cards, and with good reason, as the Hawkes Bay produces some of the best of both the country has to offer. On the coast, sits the town of Napier, one of New Zealand’s busiest commercial ports and host to a growing number of cruise ships. It’s also the country’s Art Deco capital, having been almost completely rebuilt in the Style Moderne after a devastating earthquake in 1931.

With its unspoiled coastline, beautiful sandy beaches, turquoise waters and 144 untouched islands, this region enjoys a subtropical climate, and so you can expect warm weather year round. The Bay of Islands Maritime Park is one of New Zealand’s best loved destinations, offering world-class diving and snorkeling, with an array of wildlife including, dolphins, whales, penguins and gannets. MANGAWHAI

A charming town north of Auckland, Mangawhai offers two very different beach experiences. Frolic in the surf or enjoy a peaceful swim in the harbour.
Mangawhai, also known as Mangawhai Heads, is nestled between the Pacific coast and rolling farmland. You’re offered a choice of seaside experiences here – a surf beach on one side and safe harbour beaches on the other. On the far side of the harbour is a large sand dune area that's administered by the Department of Conservation. The dunes are home to fairy terns, Caspian terns, variable oystercatchers and New Zealand dotterels. Mangawhai Heads and the village of Mangawhai are linked by a picturesque causeway surrounded by native wetlands and bush.
